Wedding Policy

Policy

Marriage is an important step in your life and in the life of your families. In coming to the church to prepare and have your wedding ceremony, you are asking God to be involved not only in the ceremony but in your married life together. Your identity with Christ and his love will strengthen your lives together, and will give a deeper meaning to your romantic love. In the eyes of the church a wedding ceremony is a service of worship, celebrating the couple’s relationship and their commitment to God. We hope this brochure can answer any basic questions you have.

Divorce and Remarriage:

The United Methodist Church recognizes, “the right of divorced person to remarry. God’s forgiving and redemptive love allows us to become whole persons who are capable of beginning a new family, under girded by faith in God.” (The Book of Resolutions of the UMC, p. 103)

Counseling:

At least three pre-marriage counseling sessions between the couple and the pastor are required.

Scheduling of Service:

The date and time of the wedding will be decided upon with the pastor. A deposit fee will be required to reserve the date on the calendar. Ceremonies will not be scheduled prior to 10:30 a.m. or after 7:30 p.m. The decision to perform the ceremony shall be the right and responsibility of the pastor. The wedding party shall have access to the church 2 hours prior and 1 ½ hours after the service. Additional time may incur a charge. We are handicapped accessible.

Receptions:

Wedding receptions may be held in the church fellowship hall.

Pastor:

Wedding ceremonies at Midway Locust Grove UMC are to be performed by the pastor of our congregation. If you would like a guest to participate, they may do so only at the invitation of our pastor.

Bulletins:

If a bulletin for the service is desired, the couple should make arrangements for this.

Rehearsal:

The rehearsal time will be set in consultation with the pastor at a time convenient to the pastor, bride and groom and the musician.

All participants in the service need to be present and on time. The marriage license should be brought to the rehearsal. Remember, this is a legal document and without it there will be no wedding!

Music:

The wedding ceremony is an order of Christian worship, so the music selected should be in keeping with the beauty and joy of the occasion. Final music selections are approved by the pastor. If you wish to provide your own organist or pianist, you may do so upon consultation with the pastor. Musicians of Midway Locust Grove UMC are sometimes available to provide music. Jim and Glenna Johnson are our church musicians. Their phone number is 573-445-4177.

Photographers:

Pictures many be taken in the sanctuary and fellowship hall before or after the ceremony. Because the wedding is a service of worship, no flash pictures are to be taken during the ceremony. “Time exposures” may be taken. Have the photographer check with the pastor before the service. Video cameras are welcome in so far as they are stationary and not distracting.

Flowers & Candles:

Please use appropriate containers for candles and flower arrangements. It is your responsibility to make sure the church’s furnishings and carpets are not damaged. All candles should be “dripless” and in holders that prevent damage to any surface the candles sit on. Candelabras are available to use, you supply the candles and make sure the carpet underneath is protected. Nothing in the altar area is to be moved without the permission of the pastor. Unity candles may be used, let the pastor know of this desire.

Please call the church office for answers to questions regarding sanctuary decorations, dressing rooms, reception facilities, etc.
